Background of the study
Indigenous artworks are vital expressions of cultural heritage, yet many traditional exhibition methods are limited by physical space, preservation challenges, and accessibility issues. At Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, a virtual exhibition system can revolutionize the way indigenous art is displayed and experienced. This system leverages digital technologies to create an online platform where high-quality images, 3D models, and interactive narratives showcase indigenous artworks. By providing virtual tours and interactive displays, the system enables a wider audience to appreciate cultural heritage without geographical constraints. It also facilitates the preservation of delicate artifacts by reducing physical handling, while offering educational content that contextualizes each piece within its cultural and historical background (Adeola, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024). Moreover, virtual exhibitions can incorporate multimedia elements such as video interviews with artists, digital storytelling, and interactive timelines, which enrich the viewer’s experience and foster cultural understanding. However, challenges such as high digital production costs, the need for advanced software, and ensuring accurate cultural representation remain. This study aims to design a virtual exhibition system tailored to showcase indigenous artworks at Kogi State Polytechnic, evaluate its impact on cultural education and audience engagement, and propose strategies to overcome technical and cultural challenges (Chinaza, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Traditional art exhibitions often face limitations in reach, preservation, and engagement, especially for indigenous artworks that require sensitive curation. At Kogi State Polytechnic, the physical display of indigenous art is constrained by limited exhibition space, high risks of deterioration, and accessibility barriers for diverse audiences. Although a virtual exhibition system offers an innovative alternative, its implementation is challenged by factors such as high development costs, the complexity of digitizing and accurately representing cultural artifacts, and potential misinterpretation of indigenous contexts. Moreover, technical challenges related to high-resolution imaging, 3D modeling, and interactive interface design can compromise the user experience. These issues result in underrepresentation and poor dissemination of indigenous cultural heritage. This study seeks to investigate the feasibility and impact of a virtual exhibition system for indigenous artworks, identify the key challenges in digital curation and technical implementation, and propose recommendations for optimizing the system to ensure culturally sensitive and engaging presentations (Ibrahim, 2024; Adeola, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is confined to the development of a virtual exhibition system for indigenous artworks at Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja. Limitations include high production costs, technical complexities, and ensuring cultural authenticity.
